Bed and Breakfasts

B&B accommodation is offered in a private room in a private home, most with private bathroom facilities. The rate will include breakfast; sometimes with other meals by arrangement.

A B&B (or more formally known as a Bed & Breakfast) is an establishment, traditionally run from the owner’s own home though more and more B&Bs are in purpose-built houses, where guests are accommodated at night in private bedrooms, most with en suite bathrooms, and where breakfast is served in the mornings.

The advantage of this type of accommodation is that it often feels, to the weary traveler, like a home away from home. Due the size and nature of these establishments the service is always personal.

Often, though this is not always the case and you should establish the expectations with the owner/ manager of the B&B that you are staying at, guests are expected to be away from the establishment for the duration of the day.  This is largely to give the staff a chance to clean and prepare for visitors later in the day.

How do you go about locating the ideal B&B? There are a few options available to you, and they include contacting a travel agent who specialises in this type of accommodation or you can conduct an internet search and have a look at the websites of a variety of B&Bs in a specific area that you would like to visit.

This way you will get to see photos and get a feel of the place you will be staying at as well as their rates and guest expectations and obligations. Remember that the more research you do beforehand the less likely you are to be disappointed in what is offered.

Interestingly, research points to the fact that when potential clients are looking for accommodation the two photos that prove to be the most popularly viewed on the B&B’s website are a picture of the outside of the establishment and then a picture of the room, including a picture of the bed.

You can begin your internet search by typing in your destination city or town and "bed and breakfast" into your search engine to get an idea of the options you'll have. As you begin to view the properties, you should consider whether the B&B has the following amenities (assuming these are important to you): private bath, temperature control, full or continental breakfast, off-street parking, daily housekeeping and the ever-important factor....location. Is it close to the night-life of the city you are visiting? Is it in close proximity to the shopping complex you plan to spend some time in? Is it within walking distance of the beach you plan to perfect your tan on?

Due the small size of most B&Bs, and therefore their limited space, and their convenient location to popular destinations and tourist attractions, it is always a good idea to book a fair time ahead of your planned stay so as to avoid disappointment that the dates that you had hoped to visit are not unavailable.
