Health Resorts
South Africa is home to first-class health and wellness spas and resorts. If you want to combine relaxation with holistic health and beauty treatments then you will be spoilt for choice. After an agonisingly long week at work, after a stressful few days of hectic meetings or an interminably long conference you more than deserve a few days, a single day or even just a few hours of the best and most relaxing treatments that a spa or health resort can offer your weary body and mind.

Historically most spas were developed at the location of natural hot springs or sources of mineral waters due to the health and healing properties of these two water sources.

It is most common now to find spa and health resorts located outside of big cities, in the peaceful surroundings of the bushveld or the Winelands where the air is fresh and the sounds of silence add to the total relaxation of the visitor to the spa or resort.

Spa treatments

Some resorts offer an all-inclusive program for visitors who intend spending a few days or longer that includes facilitated fitness classes, healthy eating, educational classes and seminars as well as the same services as a beauty salon or a day spa. Guests who book in for a few days or longer participate in the program instead of just visiting for a treatment or pure vacation.

Some of the services on offer at spas include nutrition counselling, weight loss and management, fitness consultation, massage, and traditional beauty treatments such as facials, waxing, nail care, etc.

Spa etiquette

Perhaps you have been to a spa before, but if not it is best to be informed of what constitutes good spa etiquette. Once you are familiar with the procedures and practices of a spa you will be more at ease form the minute you arrive, which will only be of benefit to you as you will enjoy your entire experience, from beginning to end, that much more. Here are a few pointers to help you make the most of your visit to the spa:

•    Leave a recorded message on your cell phone to let callers know that you are unavailable due to some time taken to enjoy a dose of well-deserved rest and relaxation – and switch your phone off before you enter the front door
•    Arrive at least 20 minutes before your spa appointment so you have time to check in, change into your robe and slippers, and relax
•    If you are uncomfortable with anything during your treatment - the pressure, the music, the temperature - speak up. The therapist will make an adjustment to improve your experience
•    You can talk during the treatment or stay quiet, as you prefer. The therapist will follow your lead
•    The therapist will normally say, "Take your time getting up," which usually means just a few minutes. It's not an invitation to take a nap

Spas can be expensive so it is always a good idea to do some research on different spas and their packages once you have decided that this is the type of break from the pressures of work and life that you need.
