With miles of coastline bordering the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, golden beaches offer endless opportunities for water sports or just relaxing.
The famous “sardine run” along the coast in June and July showcases not only the hundreds of thousands of sardines swimming up the coast, but also sharks, dolphins and other marine life.
Boasting many game and wildlife preserves, including two World Heritage sites – St. Lucia Wetland Park and Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park – KwaZulu Natal is home to some magnificent animal life. A small sampling includes hippos, crocodiles, humpback whales, African elephants and more than 400 species of birds.
The history buff will want to check out the battlefields where British, Boer and Zulu soldiers fought bloody battles. Another must-see is one of the villages where you can observe local customs such as tribal dancing, spear making or a beer drinking ceremony firsthand.
Accommodations in the province range from luxury hotels to bed and breakfasts, guest houses, self-catering suites, camping, and even unique village/hotel combos so you’re sure to find one that’s perfect for you. |
