The current island culture varies from Indian,
African, Creole, European and Chinese, as most of the population are
descendants of immigrant workers. The native language is Mauritius
Creole, but French and English are widely spoken.
The landscape varies across the island from the seashores to
lush mountain tops. Tropical gardens and rain forests contain over 700
species of native plants. Visitors also find densely populated cities to
rural sugar plantations on this tropical paradise.
The area contains many natural coral reefs in addition to numerous species of brightly colored tropical fish. The western side of the island provides the unique option of watching and swimming with dolphins. |
