All About Mauritius

MauritiusMauritius is one of a group of islands located off the eastern coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. The area first became inhabited in the 1600’s by Europeans.

The current island culture varies from Indian, African, Creole, European and Chinese, as most of the population are descendants of immigrant workers. The native language is Mauritius Creole, but French and English are widely spoken.

Though the region is a favored honeymoon hotspot, many come to enjoy the tropical location because of the clear, warm water and white sandy beaches.

The landscape varies across the island from the seashores to lush mountain tops. Tropical gardens and rain forests contain over 700 species of native plants. Visitors also find densely populated cities to rural sugar plantations on this tropical paradise.

Upon flying into the island, local transportation is provided by bus, taxi or vehicle rental. The popular past time is water recreation and many hotels provide access to water sport facilities. Opportunities are endless for swimming, waterskiing, boating, snorkeling, scuba diving and deep sea fishing.

The area contains many natural coral reefs in addition to numerous species of brightly colored tropical fish. The western side of the island provides the unique option of watching and swimming with dolphins.
