Detailed description

River Camp - four star

Perched on the banks of the meandering Kariega River, the rustically luxurious River Camp pampers its guests in four custom-made tents with en-suite bathrooms featuring hot and cold water showers.

Forest Camp - four star

Nestling in a natural forest, this secluded and private camp features eight luxury tents spaced along the steep banks of the Kariega River and connected by a series of winding boardwalks. Replete with Victorian iron baths in expansive en-suite bathrooms, a lavish staff-to-guest ratio of one-to-two, and a graceful thatched entertainment area, guests are encouraged to relax in true “Out of Africa” style.

The “under canvas” experience at Sibuya Game Reserve is a completely unique experience as Sibuya is the only South African Game Reserve where access is exclusively by boat via the stunningly beautiful Kariega River. Guests are collected at the river mouth (The River is an Estuary) in the small town of Kenton on Sea, where safe parking is provided, and the unique experience starts immediately with a gentle cruise up the Estuary to the game reserve 9 kms upstream.

After settling in to the accommodation – luxury en-suite tents on raised wooden decks- guests are able to map out their own programme with their guide. Our camps, with only 4 tents in our River Camp and 8 in our Forest Camp, result in an exclusive and personalised experience. A mixture of game drives, river cruises, guided bush or beach walks, and excellent birding, will enthrall those with a desire to fill the day, whilst hammocks in the trees or a fishing line dangling in the water will suit those who wish to take it easy.

For the really energetic canoeing, deep-sea fishing, clay-pigeon shooting and coastal cruises can all be provided at extremely reasonable rates. But what makes this a truly memorable experience is the unequalled splendour of the vistas as one views game against the magnificent backdrop of pristine coastal forest and the sea a few kilometres away.

Completing the “under canvas” experience are the tranquil evenings around the campfire listening to the lapping waters in the river and the night calls of the bush while feasting on our superb cuisine. In true bush camp tradition all the distractions are removed as the absence of electricity ensures the experience is not spoilt by the sounds of modern society. We offer Under 12's 50% disc  if sharing with parents. Our Forest Camp does not take children under 12 as it is not child friendly where as our River Camp is child friendly.

Professional guides and an abundance of game and birds, and the Big 5, will leave you saying (“Sibuya”) we will return.

Features

This breathtakingly beautiful reserve spans the meandering Kariega River on its course to meet the warm Indian Ocean and idyllic beaches of the Sunshine Coast. A natural extension to any Garden Route journey, Sibuya Game Reserve provides a magnificent setting for viewing  Africa’s redoubtable “Big Five”.

Incorporating 10 kilometres of fully navigable river, Sibuya is uniquely positioned to offer its guests boat-based arrivals and departures, fishing, watersports and the possibility of viewing whales and dolphins.

The lush bushveld, grasslands and forests play host to one of the highest densities of wildlife in South Africa, ensuring one of the best game viewing experiences in the country. A malaria-free wilderness, Sibuya is rich in plant species and attracts a multitude of diverse birdlife.

Things to do and see

Following their arrival by river launch, guests have the choice to enjoy game drives and walks, or spend time swimming, canoeing and fishing in the sub-tropical salt waters of the estuary. At night, the soft glow of lanterns and the distant roar of the ocean are the only distractions as guests are served fine fireside fare in the warm embrace of the evening fire.
