Cape Town International Airport in South Africa is the third largest
airport in Africa. This airport has won the Skytrax Best Airport in
Africa award.
The airport has been providing service to passengers since 1954. It replaced another airport in Wingfield that had provided service for Cape Town. Cape Town International was originally named D.F. Malan Airport after the man who was prime minister of South Africa at that time.
Airports Company South Africa took over ownership of the airport in the
1990s and the airport’s name was changed to Cape Town International. There are four passenger terminals in the airport. The International
Arrivals terminal and the International Departures terminal can
accommodate a great number of passengers yearly.
The airport is currently undergoing extensive expansion and upgrades
which are expected to be finished in 2015. A new terminal was opened in
2009. An extensive upgrade to the road network at the airport is
currently underway. Other projects include passenger loading bridges and
more check in desks. Domestic and international passengers will be able
to check in at the same terminal.
