The largest airport for domestic and international travel in South Africa is O.R. Tambo International Airport. This airport services over sixteen million passengers yearly and is the hub for South African Airways.
The airport was originally named the Jan Smuts Airport but was renamed in 2006 after Oliver Tambo, the former president of the African National Congress. The airport has six terminals which are divided into three main areas. These areas are for international travel, domestic travel and a transit terminal. This modern airport offers hundreds of shops to browse through as well as numerous restaurants and delicious bakeries. It also houses the South African Air Museum. Internet is available throughout the international terminal.
There are currency exchanges, ATM’s and Vat refund desks to assist with all money issues. Nedbank and ABSA can also be found on the mezzanine level of the international terminal. This beautiful airport has a chapel and a Muslim prayer center available. There is an emergency medical clinic, media conference room, a room for unaccompanied minors and a small hotel available for transit travelers.
Right outside the airport is a luxurious five star hotel for those needing to spend the night. Taxis and buses can be found here as well. The porters are easily identified in bright orange uniforms and blue shirts and are available to assist in any way possible. With over forty five airlines arriving each day, this airport in the Gauteng Province of South Africa is a perfect example of how a modern airport is run. Contact Details
