Bafana Bafana make the nation proud

Submitted by Amy ( Travel Editor ) on June 24, 2010 – 8:08 pmNo Comment

Bafana Bafana is known as the boys and they are the national football team of South Africa. The team colors are yellow and green. There was even racial segregation when football first came to South Africa in the 19th Century. No blacks were allowed to play, so in 1892 the first South African team was all white.

The rules changed gradually over the years when it came to blacks playing on national teams in South Africa. Today in the selection of the national team, the players are picked by their ability and not the color of their skin.

Currently South Africa is hosting the 19th FIFA World Cup, and is the first nation in South Africa to do this. The 2010 World Cup was brought in by the worldly popular group the black eye peas. The next acts were soul singer Alicia Keys, R&B star John Legend, singer Angelique Kidjo and well known hip shaker Shakira. There are thirteen stadiums in South Africa where the 2010 World Cup games are being held. Currently the top team in Group A is Uruguay with two wins and zero losses.

The top team in Group B is Argentina with three wins and no losses. In Group C there is a tie for the best team because USA and England both have one win, two ties and zero losses. Of Group D,E,F, G and H the top teams are Germany, Netherlands, Paraguay, Brazil and Chile.

Even though Bafana has been eliminated from the competition the South African people are still very proud. Since Bafana Bafana is hosting the 2010 World Cup, they are the only hosting city that lost in the first round. Bafana Bafana did well when defeating France in a two to one game. They would have gained entry into the second round had they not lost to Mexico.

The locals say that even though their team has been eliminated that defeating a great team like France, is a great victory all by itself. Even the President has made comments that Bafana Bafana has brought nothing but the image of pride and accomplishment to its country’s reputation.
