The Heart of Cradock
Located in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa, Cradock is a beautiful little town formed on the banks of the Great Fish River. The town was established just after the war of 1812, when a Dutch Reformed Church was built here and ranchers from around the cape began to attend the church. The church, built to mimic St. Martins-in-the-Field in England, remains today as a centrepiece of the town.
Cradock is perhaps most famous for its sulphur spa. These sulphur springs have brought people from around the world to Cradock in search of health and relief. It is said that soaking in the sulphur springs will relieve arthritis and cure other ailments.
Cradock is also home to what may be the last heard of Mountain Zebras. The Mountain Zebra National Park was established in 1937 near Cradock and is probably the driving factor to why the species has survived. Currently there are only 350 of these Zebras left. Visitors to the national park will also find that there are many other animal residents to see, all of which are indigenous to this area of South Africa.
With its proximity to places such as Port Elizabeth, visitors to Cradock can also take a day trip to the beach areas of the Indian Ocean. These beautiful beach areas are a quick drive from the town of Cradock and holiday travellers can be back in time for dinner.
Cradock is home to many national monuments and offers travellers a wonderful look into the area history. With many fine Victorian styled buildings, the down-town area of Cradock has been restored to promote this rare and historical beauty. Visitors will find that dinning, shopping and even accommodations can be found in these wonderfully historic homes.
The area is very close to other major attractions in South Africa, including the Tsolwana Game Reserve and the Valley of Desolation. The game reserve is a park that caters to some of Africa’s finest animals. See giraffe, lion and many other animals in their true habitat. The Valley of Desolation is a geological wonder that cannot be described, it can only be experienced.
