Sabi Sand Reserve
It is the oldest private game reserve in South Africa and Sabi Sand Reserve in Mpumalanga is probably also the most successful. The entire game reserve is made up of many private game farms that in total cover an area of over 56000 hectares of bushveld. This region has only ever been a wilderness area and is seen by many as the nursery of sustainable wildlife and ecotourism in South Africa as it is the front-runner of so many other similar projects.

Sabi Sand Reserve is truly blessed in its diversity of animal and bird species. It is fortunate enough to share a 50km long unfenced border with the Kruger National Park which, in turn, allows the animals to wander unhindered between the two reserves, and therefore allows visitors to Sabi Sand to experience a proliferation of wild animals in their natural environment.

Amongst the many species of animals in the reserve is the internationally recognisable Big 5 . These are elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard. There are also almost 300 species of birds, migratory and non-migratory, a variety of snakes, tortoises, lizards, and other reptiles, insects, and much more.

The vegetation in the reserve is made up of a phenomenal diversity of grasses, shrubs and trees, and is known as ‘bushveld’, which is so typical of this region.
As the name implies, bushveld is well-grassed plains that are randomly dotted with dense clusters of trees and tall shrubs. In the winter months, this is the dry season of this area, the grasses turn brown and yellow.

Though it may sound like a dry region there are two rivers that supply the game reserve with the invaluable resource that is water. These are the Sabie River and the Sand River - this is how the reserve acquired its name.

As mentioned, Sabi Sand Reserve is comprised of many privately owned farms, most of which are operated as commercially active safari destinations. The owners of these farms form part of an association that has a vested interest in the Sabi Sand Reserve, and all of whom share a common goal of environmental protection and sustainability.

Accommodation options are almost as plentiful as the animals that inhabit the magnificence of the Sabi Sand Reserve. Whether you are looking for the most luxurious stay on offer, a honeymoon experience to remember forever, a health spa retreat, standard family accommodation, or just about any sort you can think of, Sabi Sand Reserve will be able to meet and surpass your expectations. There is a superb selection of tented camps, and lodges, each with something unique to offer, contained within the reserve where dedication to service excellence knows no limits. Thrilling game drives and guided walks, where you are afforded the privilege of entering the animals’ domain, must be the highlight of any visit to this small part of heaven on earth.
