Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

ImageMany people are looking for a vacation that is a little different these days. One place that many people are starting to look at is the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. This is a very large wildlife preserve located in Southern Africa.

This park borders between South Africa and Botswana and adjoins Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa and Gemsbok National Park in Botswana to make a travel destination people love. Let us take a closer look at this park's history and all it offers today's tourist.

Kalahari Gemsbok National Park was established in 1931 as a way to protect migrating game and help levitate the poaching problem. Over the years, other committees were set up and finally in 1992, they started to work jointly together as one and in May 2000, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park was formed. Both Botswana and South Africa has worked together to make Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park one of the better parks in Africa and the world.

The park is largely located in the Kalahari Desert and consists of sand dunes and very little vegetation. The dry riverbeds of Nossob and Auob rivers run through it, but only flow around once a century. This does not mean water is not around as some flows underground for some grass and vegetation. Large thunderstorms many times can fill these rivers up very quickly and the animals for a short time bask in the water until it is gone once again. Temperature extremes are one problem in this region. Midsummer temperatures can reach over 100 degrees while winter nights can see below freezing temperatures as well.

In the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park the one thing that sets it apart are the beautiful animals that you can see roaming the park. Kalahari lions, cheetahs, leopards are just some of the majestic animals that you will be able to see. Things such as blue wildebeest, eland and others also dot the landscape as well. Over 200 species of birds also can be found in this area as well. Vultures, raptors, and Eagles all can be spotted in this wildlife preserve.

Within the park there is traditional tourist lodges available for you to use. These are lodges with things such as air conditioning, swimming pools, and shopping for you to enjoy. If you want to camp in the wilderness than maybe wilderness camps are for you. Most of these camps have little to offer and you will need to bring most of your supplies. If you love the outdoors though this maybe something you will want to try. If you love nature, though give the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park a try you will enjoy all it has to offer.
