Kimberley Mine Museum
Kimberley is a town that is located in South Africa . The town of Kimberley itself was built around the diamond mining industry. It was also a major trade route for those traveling to and from the gold mines and cobalt-filled region of Transvaal during the 19th century. Diamonds were first discovered in the city during the mid 1800’s.

When many think of Kimberley, they automatically think of “The Big Hole. ” This site is the world’s largest man-made excavations. It has an impressive depth of 215 meters. An estimated 22.5 million tons of earth was removed from the hole. Nearly 2,722 kilograms of diamonds were unearthed during the diamond-mining process until all activity was officially suspended in 1914. Because of this site, the city became a major hub of commercial activity for the region. The site marks the beginning of the regional diamond rush.

The McGregor Museum was originally built in 1897. The museum was built as a memorial to Alexander Mcgregor. Its original purpose was that of a sanatorium. The building itself would eventually be the home of the Hotel Belgrave. It would later be transformed into a convent, which was actively involved in serving the local community. This building has seen many uses, but its primary function is now that of a research facility for the region.

The Transport Hall is home to a beautiful antique display of classic automobiles. The vehicles displayed are from the 19th century. It even features showcases an antique railway locomotive, a fresh reminder of the steam locomotion. At this museum, you will be able to examine the steam locomotive up close, as the displays are set up to encourage a hands-on experience.

The Kimberley Mine Museum consists of streets and 48 historic buildings. The town is representative of the mining era that once thrived in the region. Many of the buildings are preserved or reconstructed to fit the concept of the replica mining hub that is central to the city’s commercial legacy. The miner’s cottages, saloons, auction rooms, and pubs all come together to create a truly authentic and historically accurate learning experience.
