Langebaan is an idyllic seaside town which is situated 120kms north of Cape Town, on the West Coast of South Africa. This is a town that has the feel of relaxation and good-old fashioned friendliness in the air (which is crystal clear on any given day of the year).
Langebaan was established in 1922, along the eastern shores of the Langebaan lagoon , which stretches inland in a southerly direction for 17 kilometres, and which is part of a protected area incorporated into the West Coast National Park. Langebaan and the lagoon are extremely popular as water-sports destinations, with day-visitors and locals alike launching their boats and catamarans, enjoying waterskiing and canoeing.
The lagoon is also a world-renowned birding spot with migratory birds from as far as Russia stopping here annually. The Park is also a favourite destination with nature lovers and hikers. During the annual flower season (July to September), for which this region is world famous, the landscape is transformed into a mass of multi-coloured blooms. To a large extent, the permanent residents of Langebaan rely on the income that the constant stream of holiday-makers and day visitors generates, though there are many who have decided to retire to the beauty and tranquillity of the town and its surrounds.
Langebaan boasts up-market and budget (and everything in-between) accommodation, a wide variety of restaurants, two caravan parks, a golf course, tennis courts, a bowling green, a yacht club, and the conventional shops and businesses, selling anything from essential items to sporting goods to holiday homes. Synonymous with Langebaan is Club Mykonos, a holiday resort built in the style of a Greek fishing village just outside the town, and billed as the place for “the most FUN under the West Coast SUN ”, and this it most certainly is.
Club Mykonos has something for everyone, young and old alike. For those in search of energetic activity there is an indoor, heated swimming pool, there are 6 outdoor swimming pools, 5 tennis courts, 4 squash courts, and a gym. Looking for fun, but of a more leisurely kind? There are pool tables, a games room, and saunas. And then of course there is the casino where you can try your hand at convincing Lady Luck of your worthiness of leaving one-up on the house.
No visit to the West Coast is complete without a seafood meal or, at the very least, a fish braai. Be sure to visit Die Strandloper (The Beach Walker) – an amazing culinary experience right on the beach.
Due to them being situated on the West Coast, Langebaan and Club Mykonos are blessed to experience the most amazing sunsets every day of the year, which you can enjoy on the beach or sipping cocktails in a restaurant or even on the lagoon.
Once you have experienced the peace, tranquillity and wide-open spaces of the West Coast you will find yourself wanting to return, time and time again.
